I don't have children, so I may not be the best person to answer this question. However, I do know many mothers who are working engineers, and their children seem to be doing great. There are many ways to handle parenthood and a career. Some women stay home for several years, and then go back to work. Others work part time while their children are young, and then go back to full time when the children are older. And many work full time after maternity leave. There's no one right way to balance children and a career, and the nice thing is that you can change your mind at any time. If you go back full time, and decide you'd rather work part time, your employer will work with you if you are a valued member of the team. My friends who stay home, work part time, or work full time all seem happy with their choices.
