Would you recommend getting a PE even if you won't be working in construction?

Hi Kim,

I'm a senior studying mechanical engineering and robotics at the University of Pennsylvania. I have a 5th year planned to finish my masters degree in robotics. My dream is to work for Disney in a lot of the same capacity that you have. I am also currently studying for my FE exam in the spring. However I'm having second thoughts because the more I look into it the more it seems it's really only necessary for the construction industry. What's your experience with the PE in your area and with Disney?

Also any general advice about becoming an engineering with Disney? For example I applied for ride engineering internship in Glendale and will be applying for the professional engineering internships when those come out for the summer.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes,

Eric Quesada

    Hi Eric!

My husband actually has a master's in robotics from University of Pennsylvania! I would say that the PE is VERY important to Disney. Growing up in the northeast and living in Boston I did not know what it was until I started to work for Disney, and all of my peers (interns at the time) were taking the FE. The PE is one of those things that sets people apart, and a "box to check" so to speak. I would highly recommend taking the FE exam.

Also, applying for internships is the best way on getting your foot in the door with the company. If you are interested in mechanical, having SolidWorks and ANSYS experience is a big plus, and a GPA of 3.0 or higher is a must. Any type of design experience is also a big plus. If you have trouble getting an internship another way is to do the Disney college program, and then participate in networking events once you are at Disney. Best of luck!
