Monica, Staten Island AddedSunday, April 24, 2016 at 10:47 PM I've always had an interest for green technology and clean energy Hey Hope! I've currently been going to college for the past 4 years as a biochemistry major with the intention of becoming a doctor. Unfortunately, I realized I am more of thinker/creator/full of empathy type of girl instead and wanted to know your thoughts as to whether I would know if engineering is for me. I've always had an interest for green technology, clean energy and have been immensely invested in the health field in terms of enjoying eating food with the psychology of the French because they have the naturally slimmest people in the developed world (I highly recommend Karen LeBillon's book French Kids Eat Everything because it does the mentality justice!) I've been learning through YouTube the possibility of blogging becoming a full-time job but frankly I don't see that as a possibility in terms of "thinking realistically." I'd love to hear your thoughts as a woman in this day and age as to what she should do to figure out her next steps. What certainly stood out to me is your self-description of "thinker/creator/full-of-empathy type." Something that was hard for me to reconcile was how can I make a difference if I go down a technical career path? Where can I find humanity in a technology based world? I have always been a creator too, both in engineering and art, and I try to find outlets for all of it. Engineering lets me apply math and science; I get to think outside the box and build/tinker. I chose to find an outlet for painting and drawing (etc) in my volunteer work and hobbies. I regularly volunteer with kids because that is also a realm I am passionate about. I think when it comes to pursuing your career, it's okay to have many interests and they might not all intersect. When it came to choosing a degree, I knew that going down the path of engineering would be really challenging and that intrigued me. I encourage you to choose something that will interest you and be enjoyable, but your career isn't the only thing that defines you. If you choose one of things that you listed above, you can still keep the rest of it! You might just pursue those other activities in different ways :) I hope that helps, feel free to ask me to clarify anything. Thanks, Hope
