Jessica, Chicago, IL asked Kim Wheeler, Abbott AddedThursday, December 24, 2015 at 1:56 AM mechanical engineering or electrical engineering Hi Kim, I'm a sophomore at the University of Iowa. I'm majoring in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Math and Spanish. However, I'm not sure Electrical Engineering is for me. I'm in between Mechanical and Electrical. I would like your opinion on what major would seem right for me. I like building and designing things, I'm very artistic, I like to figure out how things work like things from how a dvd player works to how a roller coaster works, I hate computer coding I suck at it unless someone helps me clear up the errors, I would like to get a job at Google or somewhere big, and I want to invent my own device or something that'll be to some use to the world. What keeps changing my mind on what engineer I want to be is TV shows like the Flash has a mechanical engineer who invents gadgets and the Flash's costume, and Criminal Minds' character Garcia, who feeds them information and hacks into computers and such. Thanks, Jess Related to Choosing a Degree, Electrical, Mechanical Reset Sort By Default Kate Fay , Verizon Answered Thursday, December 24, 2015 at 1:56 AM Hi Jess, Since you are a sophomore I would look into how difficult it would be to switch disciplines. It may put to a semester or so behind in graduation date if you switch now. However, if you do want to switch the sooner the better so you don't get too far behind. From what you described it does sound like mechanical engineering would be better for you. Mechanical engineering gives you a better insight into how things work. You will still need some very basic computer programming since a lot of programs involve some sort of programming now. Also remember that an engineering degree is a problem solving degree. You are not limiting yourself to the discipline you major in. I studied mechanical engineering but now I work in telecommunication engineering. So if you stay with electrical or switch to mechanical it does not mean you have to have a career only in that field. Kim Wheeler , Abbott Answered Thursday, December 24, 2015 at 1:56 AM Hi Jess! Thanks for the question. To add on to what Kate said, I think mechanical engineering may be a better fit for you, especially when you discuss understanding how things work, usually that is more geared towards a mechanically-minded person. Keep in mind that Mechanical and Electrical engineering majors usually offer a minor in the other. For example, I had a bunch of friends that minored in electrical engineering or controls as they had an interest in that. And like Kate said, engineering is a problem solving degree so you can have opportunities in many fields. I have many friends who have degrees in mechanical but actually spend the majority of their time doing electrical engineering. One thing I would recommend is to try to apply for an internship this upcoming summer in either of the fields so that you can get a better idea of what engineers in that field do. Oh and don't worry, I wasn't very good at coding either. :)
