It goes without saying that someone with both aptitude and interest would do well in the profession. Many of my cis-female, engineering friends were identified as having the aptitude, but the interest wasn’t there initially. I was also in this category. Engineering is such a broad field that anyone with the aptitude should be able to find an area of interest. In fact, for me, over the years my interests broadened, and I began to enjoy engineering topics that were initially non-preferred. As a 20+ year engineering professor, I have taught many students who had interest but didn’t meet traditional aptitude standards. Overwhelmingly, those students succeeded and are doing well in the profession. Choosing a career is a tough decision. I think that engineering is a great choice because it is a great profession and an excellent pathway to pivot to other careers like medicine, law and business.
