Kaitlyn asked Kim de Groh, NASA Glenn Research Center AddedSaturday, May 9, 2020 at 5:46 PM Does spacex work with NASA? We watch space x launches on YouTube and I was wondering if NASA works to create space x ships and also if space x is part of NASA or standalone Related to Aeronautical/Aerospace , Mechanical Reset Sort By Default Kim de Groh , NASA Glenn Research Center Answered Thursday, July 9, 2020 at 3:13 PM Hi Kaitlyn, SpaceX is a commercial company, similar to Boeing (i.e. “standalone”). NASA works closely with SpaceX in numerous ways. As one example, SpaceX is under “contract” with NASA to provide cargo and human (astronaut) launches to the International Space Station. This is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program (https://www.nasa.gov/exploration/commercial/crew/index.html). SpaceX develops and builds their own rocket systems (Dragon capsules and Falcon rockets). In addition, NASA researchers (like myself) work with design engineers at SpaceX conducting research together, or sharing data for developing durable spacecraft. I have provided some of my flight data to SpaceX engineers. So, NASA and SpaceX are partners who work together on the US spaceflight program. Kim de Groh
