Ask an Engineer Answer: Do you find it difficult?

Have you always liked engineering, and do you find it difficult?

Q:  Dear everyone, I would like to know if when you were growing up did you like what you are doing now, or you just got interested when you got a little older? My second question is, the job you are doing now, are they really hard or just easy for you to do? Oh and my last final question is, did you meet someone that you like there during your work time?   Please answer these questions!!!!!!!!!!   -john russell

Hi John.  If you read my profile you’ll see that I didn’t discover engineering until I was older, but I always enjoyed solving problems, exploring the world, and thinking about things creatively.  You ask a good question about whether engineering is just easy to do.  There are generally challenges along the way as in any career.  That is particularly true in engineering, because engineers try to solve problems.  If you didn’t have a problem, then you probably wouldn’t need an engineer.  Sometimes I get frustrated, and then I don’t think it is very easy.  Other times I get to see an idea become reality, and it seems fun.  It always requires me to think hard about things, but that is part of why I chose to do it.  I’m not sure I understood your third question about whether I like the people I work with.  I think that no matter where you work you will find some people that you really enjoy being around and others who you don’t relate to as well.  Generally I like my coworkers a lot because they are often other engineers who enjoy thinking creatively about things and having intelligent conversations.  -Simil
