I'm a high school student. I love math, and engineering has always sounded like a good career path for me. However, I don't want to live my life stressed out and busy ALL the time. Will this be typical if I go into an engineering field? I'm prepared to do a lot of work, but I do not want to be overwhelmed. How complicated is the work that goes into being an engineer, on a scale from 1-10?

    Caroline,

That's a great question. There isn't really one answer to it. I also loved math as a high school student. That is a big help in engineering school. Engineering classes are demanding (maybe complicated at times), and you will learn a lot. ...

I have a degree in physiology, but know I am for sure switching to engineering. I don't feel that I'm all that interested in biomedical engineering though. Would a second bachelor's be worth it? Or should I pursue a master's degree? What is the difference between having a bachelor's or a master's in engineering?

    Kaylee,

That's great to hear that you are thinking about switching fields. I would recommend talking with someone at the college you are interested in. Most engineering departments have a Graduate Director--that would be a good person. Some ...

I graduated with an Industrial Engineering degree in December of 2007. In school I had great internship experiences and at graduation I had 2 job offers. But right before I could accept one, my husband's job changed and we moved to Michigan. In Michigan in 2008, there just weren't jobs. Shortly after, we had our first child who was born with special needs and I knew I needed to be home with him. Fast forward eight years and two more kids and I'm itching to get out of the house and put my brain ...

That's a great question, and honestly I don't know the answer. I doubt your degree is useless but it probably needs updating. I would talk with someone at Grand Valley. You might consider taking a couple courses there. In addition to learning new ...

Hi, Jaime. It is possible but you will probably have to take several undergrad Mechanical Engineering (ME) courses in addition to the masters coursework. The number of courses will depend on the grad school that you go to. If you're still working on ...

Hello, I just finished my first semester at college as a chemical engineering major but lately i am been putting a lot of thought about whether or not I want to stay in chem-e, or if I want to switch to Mechanical Engineering. Or, if I want to stay in Chemical but get a Mech-E minor. I was very undecided about which discipline to pick when applying to college and at Rowan, you can't just apply as engineering undecided. You have to pick a concentration when you apply. I loved chemistry ...

    Rachel,

This is a great question. There is probably no simple answer. I love hearing about students that like to tinker and make things. It is a great skill that will serve you well. An interest in both mechanical and chemical is a great ...

I started off my freshman year as a Mechanical Engineer student. Now i am in Sophomore year and i am having a big confusion whether the major i selected was right or not? Since I'm a mechanical engineer, it would be great if you stayed with mechanical. On the other hand, it sounds like you need to explore environmental engineering and chemical engineering to see if you would like one of those better. I don't know much ...

I don't know much about Ocean Engineering. I do know that several universities offer a major in it and that the coursework has some overlap with mechanical engineering. Florida Atlantic University's website has a nice description: ...

I have a BS in accounting & a MS in finance from CMU. I currently taking the undergrad math/science sequence at a local college and have a 4.0 gpa. I love math and would like to get a degree in mechanical engineering. But it appears that many of the top engineering programs frown on accepting students for a 2nd bachelor's degree. Is it possible to get a MS in engineering without an undergrad engineering/physics degree? If not any advice on getting accepted into a good undergrad engineering ...

Jackie, That's great that you are interested in mechanical engineering. I'm surprised to hear that some schools have discouraged you from pursuing a 2nd bachelor's. I would check with other schools. I know that my school would welcome you! It is ...

OK - Every time I make this statement, the response I usually get from people is that they laugh! My family and I have taken several cruises and I absolutely love it. I am amazed at the ship, the design from bow to stern I love everything about it. I am interested in working on building or designing parts of the cruise ship in some way shape or form, but don't know what type of engineering that would fall under and more importantly what colleges would offer those types of studies. Can you ...

I don't have a complete answer, but here are some thoughts. You might want to look into an Ocean Engineering or Marine Engineering programs. These types of programs would include ship design. MIT has an undergraduate program in Mechanical and Ocean ...
