There are many different types of engineering out there from Aerospace to Agricultural, but regardless of which specific field you choose, I think it’s important to have a diverse education background. If you can take accelerated (Honors, AP, IB) science and math courses, please do! Taking advanced courses in High School is a great way to obtain a solid engineering foundation in a smaller class setting—plus, if you do well enough, you can save some money by skipping those courses in college. Most engineering degrees require base coursework in Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Earth/Life Sciences; start there. One more important thing I’d like to add: I mentioned it’s important to have a diverse background. Although STEM skills are the building blocks of engineering, don’t forget about other important skills! Take a writing class. Learn a second language. Enjoy reading about European History. Any class that teaches critical thinking will be very useful, and I guarantee that if you take classes that you like, you’ll learn something that will help you in your career path. Good luck, and have a great school year. - Jasmine Austin
