I'm currently working in the Initial Design and Naval Architecture department of a major ship building company. I just finished up the support arrangement for a tanker we're about to build. It was quite the project. I had to take the weight of the ship and distribute it over the blocks that they build the ship on top of. I had to make sure the blocks could support the weight and I also had to look at the concrete slab underneath and make sure it doesn't crack. I'm really excited to see the ship built because I can look at it and the supports holding it up and say, "I designed that!" My favorite project however is the structural testing I've been doing. I really like testing because it's a bit more hands on than our typical work. I get to write the test procedure and plan how we will preform the test. I have to design the test specimens. Then I get to be there while we do the tests. I collect the data and then get to take it back to the office and compare it to my predictions. It's really fun and I learn a lot!
