Lynette Contreras asked Zoe Mote, Georgia Institute of Technology AddedMonday, April 13, 2020 at 1:03 AM Will a non-engineering internship hurt my chances at getting into college? Hello, I have recently decided I wanted to major in biomedical/ bioengineering and I wanted to know if a non-engineering internship might hurt my chances of getting into competitive programs? I'm a junior in high school and have the opportunity to apply to shadow an EMT, but I want to make sure that it would not make me seem undecided to admissions officers. I don't think that it would hurt at all! I think that sounds like an excellent experience. Biomedical engineers often work with people in medical professions to collaborate and identify clinical needs for new innovations. I think witnessing emergency medicine would even help your application, because it may be able to help you identify certain health conditions or types of medical devices or inefficiencies that you may want to help solve as an engineer. In my college senior project, I designed a device to be used by EMTs in emergency bleeding situations. It would have been helpful for me to have shadowed some EMTs to better understand how feasible that would be! Best of Luck.
