I studied chemistry and then did a postdoc in applied and engineering physics. I first thought I wanted to teach and took a two year teaching position. Turns out I loved teaching but did not like grading. Also, I wanted to have more impact and so I joined a company - United Technologies. I joined their central research facility - United Technologies Research Center and got to work on lots of exciting projects that could have real impact in the future. One example was an innovative way to absorb carbon dioxide for astronauts when they breath and from inside the space shuttle. Another example was a way to purify the air. Yet another was a way to decompose used refrigerants. It was great to work on different ideas and on next generation technologies like hydrogen and fuel cells. Eventually, I joined the U.S. Department of Energy where I now fund and manage research - instead of doing it myself. But I definitely recommend having time in industry where you can use your creativity and technical knowledge to make a difference in an area you are passionate about.

Think about topics you might like to work on and that might help you decide what type of job to eventually get. I definitely suggest trying different things before you decide.
