Ask an Engineer Answer: Do you have to have a degree?

Do you have to have a degree?

Q: Is it possible to be a mechanical engineer at the age of 18 or do you have to have a degree from college?   Your Fan,  Jennifer, age 11

Hi Jennifer. The short answer to your question is: yes, you do need a college degree to be a mechanical engineer. As I'm sure you know, being an engineer involves a lot of responsibility; people depend on you to design and build safe and reliable products. In order to get to this point, you need education and training. College engineering programs are designed to meet certain standards so that when you graduate, you have the knowledge necessary to build and design safe, functional systems.  Different states and provinces have varying requirements in order for you to be recognized as a professional engineer, but they all require at least an engineering degree. -Yasmin
