I do not work for the auto sector but I have a few friends who work for Fiat and Continental Auto. My friends have degrees in Mechanical Engineering and in college joined the Society for Automotive Engineering. The auto industry frequently hires students with mechanical engineering degrees and also electrical engineering degrees. If you have interest in the auto industry, I suggest you check out SAE if there are any chapters near you. Good luck!
