The Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology & Science at N.C. State University focuses its intellectual, human and financial resources in support of innovative individuals and programs involved in science, mathematics and engineering driven enterprises with demonstrated potential for high impact educational, economical and other benefits to society. The Kenan Fellows Program for Teacher Leadership is the flagship K-12 STEM education initiative of the Kenan Institute, and addresses the critical need to develop and empower high-quality teachers, who in turn, make learning more authentic for students.
Our engineers
We tap the wealth of professional expertise in North Carolina’s private sector, universities and community colleges to enrich learning opportunities for teachers and students. Teachers, researchers and businesses collaborate to make science and math education relevant, engaging and most of all, effective. Our Fellows spend three to five weeks in the summer interning in a higher education lab or industry setting. In this capacity, engineers in the private and public sectors serve as mentors to K-12 educators to bring engineering design thinking to students.
What makes us awesome
The Kenan Fellows Program for Teacher Leadership is the largest STEM-focused teacher leadership program in North Carolina. The Program bridges the gap between K-12 education, industry and research by immersing teacher leaders in highly technical and/or locally relevant STEM work experiences and supporting them as they design methods for transferring their learning back to the classroom. The internship is the centerpiece of the program and is supported by 80 hours of professional development that focuses on building leadership capacity; instructional strategies for integrating data literacy, digital learning, and project-based learning.
Kenan Fellows create hands-on lessons based on their internship experience. Our lesson database is searchable to subject area and grade level and can be found at:
