Why Engineering? I chose engineering because I have to know how and why things work the way they do. I also love to know if the 'how' of why things work can be manipulated and improved.
School Days I went to New Mexico State University for my graduate and undergraduate degree. I am currently pursuing my PhD in Performance Psychology at Grand Canyon University. My dissertation is on the Persistence of Women Engineers.
My Day At Work I spend a lot of time designing test fixtures, working in CAD programs (such as ProE and NX). I spend the rest of my time conducting tests, tearing down the test fixtures, and then rebuilding them when a test needs it.
Proud Moments My proudest moment was also my hardest - it was when I realized I needed a change of scenery. I was feeling the pressure to grow, but couldn't in the position I had. It was really challenging (and scary) to figure out the next steps. I'm glad I did because now I have a dream position. The learning is endless!
Challenges I've had a TON of challenges. The challenges I did not expect are the psychological challenges. Engineering is working with people, designing for people, and even managing yourself! This is why so many people resign from engineering. Women leave at high rates, but the rate men leave isn't too different from women! This is the reason I am pursuing a PhD in psychology. My emphasis is in human performance.
My Family I have three kids and a husband. I never thought I would have this many kids! But they are so much fun and I my heart is so full! They are little scientists and explorers of our world and it is fascinating to watch them make their way about this world. I love their fresh perspectives to common things. My husband is a heavy civil bridge engineer. He travels to where the work is, and we all get to go with him sometimes. Its amazing seeing the roads and bridges he helps build turn into the ones we use on a daily basis!
Dreams and Goals My short term goals are to keep learning. My long term goals are to finish this PhD! Then I would like to conduct research for women in engineering. Perhaps as a SWE researcher!
Inspiration My friends and family have had the greatest influence on me. They are very supportive and they can see my potential even when I am late to see it.
Hobbies I LOVE to take pictures and enter them in the state fair. I'm terrible at growing gardens, but I keep trying. I love to mountain bike! I love reading (my addiction right now is philosophy books). I am very into helping and watching my kids learn whatever they are into (lately its art, crafts, science, and swimming).
