REGISTRATION DETAILS

You may wish to take some time to review the Gallery of Women Engineers to see how it is organized. Your profile will have two parts: a short profile and a full bio. To complete registration, you need to supply information for at least Part One. Part Two can be generated by NAE staff.

Keep in mind that the primary audience for the gallery is middle and high school age girls. To make your profile compelling as well as informative to this audience, we suggest that, as you write, you imagine that you are explaining your work to a 12-year-old niece. Use first person.

Please note: To keep this form secure, the server will automatically log users off after 30 minutes. You may wish to prepare your answers in a separate file and copy the text into the form to streamline the submission process.

YOUR PROFILE
Your profile features short responses to the following questions:

  • What do you do in your current work situation?
  • Why did you choose engineering?
  • Where did you go to school and what degree(s) do you have? *
  • Describe in general terms your work experience. In particular, what kinds of activities have typically been part of your work?
  • What do you like most about being an engineer or doing engineering work? *
  • Which of your career (education or other) accomplishments are you proudest of?
  • What challenges have you met and conquered in your pursuit of an engineering career?
  • Please tell us a little about your family.
  • What are your short-term (1-2 years) and long-term (10+ years) goals?
  • What (or who) had/has the greatest influence on your life choices?
  • Describe something about your life outside of work: your hobbies, or perhaps a favorite book or inspirational quote.
  • What advice would you give to a young woman considering a career in engineering? *
  • Is there a particular engineering experience, inspirational story or other information you would like to share with EngineerGirl visitors? (Personal, work, or organizational websites are welcome.)

You do not have to answer all questions, but please respond to at least 6 questions, including those with asterisks(*).

Photos
As part of your profile we would like to include your picture. The gallery submission form includes two fields where you can attach photographs. If possible, we hope that you can provide two separate pictures: one a portrait and the other more informal - like a picture of you at work, on vacation, or with your family.

Clicking on the "Browse" button will open a file selection box. Two separate attachment fields have been provided since you may attach only one file per field. We recommend using JPEG or GIF formats for these images. You do not need to worry about the size of the image: NAE staff will resize them to fit the EngineerGirl pages.

If you don't have access to digital images. Please send one or two photographs to the address below. We will scan them to create images for the website and return the originals to you.

ASK AN ENGINEER
All members of the Gallery of Women Engineers serve as role models for young women interested in engineering and agree to participate in the Ask an Engineer program.  Through this program, site visitors may ask questions of practicing engineers.  Generally these questions will take little time to answer, yet they are a way to make a personal connection with students interested in pursuing engineering.  (For a sample of the types of questions you may be asked you may visit the Ask An Engineer page on this website.)  Your contribution to this program is very valuable and will serve as a significant resource for EngineerGirl visitors.

Selected questions and answers may be posted on the EngineerGirl webpage for review by other visitors to the site.  If you are unable to answer a question you may request it be passed to another member of the Gallery.  In order to protect your privacy as well as the privacy of EngineerGirl visitors all emailed questions and responses will be filtered through EngineerGirl without the release of personal email addresses as described below.

RELEASE FORM
A signed copy of your release form must be received by the NAE before your profile may be included in the Gallery of Women Engineers.

PRIVACY AND SECURITY
We recognize the need to protect the privacy of both the girls who come to the EngineerGirl website looking for information and role models and the women who have agreed to participate in the Gallery of Women Engineers and related programs. In response to this need, we have developed a process for handling questions and requests that is secure and does not require the release or sharing of any email addresses.

The Gallery, however, also provides networking and mentoring opportunities. We recommend that if you wish to provide students or other EngineerGirl visitors with your email address that you do so in your response to their specific questions or requests. This would allow them to contact you directly with follow-up questions or messages.

The NAE will not release the email addresses of site visitors.  Review the EngineerGirl and National Academies privacy policy for complete details.
