What I Do
I am the Chief Operating Officer for AT&T Labs.
Why Engineering?
The most significant factor in my success has been my willingness to learn new things and to not be afraid of what I do not know. I entered college at a time when women seldom chose engineering as a field, and I was not encouraged when at school to follow that curriculum. However, in the early 70's affirmative action encouraged employers to give women opportunities in what were then called "non-traditional" fields. Hence, I was introduced to engineering.
My Day At Work
I assist the Chief Technology Officer of AT&T (also the President of AT&T Labs) in discharging his duties and in running the day-to-day operations of the Labs. I have direct responsibility for managing financial matters pertaining to research and development work performed by AT&T Labs, determining which technologies are funded, and managing the program office that reviews the progress of funded technical projects.
My Family
I am a single mother of two wonderful young adults who are both in college. I have a pet, Sophie, who is a mixed breed German shepherd and yellow Labrador. I love ballroom dancing, and my 18 year-old son and I are taking lessons together.
Hobbies
I try to golf, love to garden, and read everything I can get my hands on.
School Days
Undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts, majoring in History. Schooled at Stanford University via an executive education program in Engineering Economics Harvard Business School via their Program for Management Development (PMD).
