Career Description

"I travel by airplane a lot. When I fly at night and look down I see lights. It is so satisfying to me to know that my work helps keep those lights on!"

Highlight

NOTE ABOUT THE PICTURE - ALL THOSE ARE WOMEN ENGINEERS - AND PAST NATIONAL PRESIDENTS OF THE SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS!  I'm the one at the far right.

What I Do

I provide consulting services to electric utilities and serve as an expert witness. I testify in regulatory processes to help electric utilities get power plants licensed and to help them adjust their rates to recover their costs.

Why Engineering?

Because I love math and I love solving problems and puzzles and finding creative and meaningful solutions.

My Day At Work

During my career, I have run computer models that simulate the operation of all of the power plants on an electric utility’s system now and in the future to determine how to operate the existing power plants, when new power plants will be needed, and what type of fuel should be used for those new power plants.

Proud Moments

I am proud to have been associated with power plants that are in operation today. I am also very proud to have been elected to serve as an outside director on the board of Georgia Transmission Corporation.

Challenges

The biggest challenge has been often being the only woman and learning to deal with that with a very big sense of humor.

My Family

I am the oldest of 4 children. My sister is a PhD research scientist. Both of my brothers are trained as engineers. My father was a PhD engineer. My husband and I live in Colorado with our vegetarian cat, Robbie.

Dreams and Goals

To perform meaningful work and satisfy the needs of my clients

Inspiration

My parents.

Hobbies

For fun, I play tennis and do needlework. I also nominate technical women for national awards. Go to www.greatwomen.org and look up Admiral Grace Murray Hopper Lillian Moller Gilbreth, Dr. Virginia Apgar, Sheila Widnall, Eleanor Baum, Maria Goeppert-Mayer, Chien-Shiung Wu, Gerty Cori, and Harriet Strong. I nominated them all!

Want to be an Engineer?

Go for it! Sure it is work but everything in life worth doing is worth working for.
