What I Do Working at a start up, I do a lot of different roles from manufacturing engineering and program management to finance and business operations. There's even some IT thrown into the mix! I work closely with outside contract vendors since we are small and do not have all our capabilities in our company of 25 people. It is a fast paced company but very fun! Before that I worked at a much bigger company (5000+ people) in different roles for 14 years.
Why Engineering? I was inspired by Dolly the sheep (Google it). Coming from a family of doctors, I knew I wanted to go into the medical field but not necessarily coming a medical doctor. Biomedical Engineering gave me the ability to go into the healthcare space and willingness to solve very complex problems that you can't just look up on the internet.
School Days BS Biomedical Engineering - Georgia Tech MBA/MS Manufacturing Engineering - Boston University
My Day At Work The majority of my day is taken up managing our outside vendors over the phone and sometimes in person. Since we are a small company, we cannot do everything internally and thus use contract companies to manufacture and test our product.
Proud Moments Having a part of the development and launch of products from my previous company help thousands of patients Getting the Georgia Tech College of Engineering Council of Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni Award Seeing the senior design team I sponsored become a semi-finalist for the Inventure prize
Challenges One of the things I enjoy most is crushing expectations and challenging biases. #engineerlikeagirl
My Family My grandfather was a doctor that worked for the WHO, my aunts and uncles are doctors, and I knew that I wanted to go into the medical field, but not be a doctor, which is why I went into Biomedical Engineering. I have a daughter and a son who I encourage to solve problems and encourage them to just try (and not have fear of failing). One of the best things about having children is to relive the love of LEGOs!!
Dreams and Goals Short term goal is to develop some products that has the potential to truly impact patient's lives. Long term goal is to see these products impact patient's lives so they can live their life the way they want.
Inspiration My family and friends have immense impact on my life choices. I have two cousins with a rare neuro-degenerative disease that inspire me and I have a friend with multiple sclerosis that was on a medicine I manufactured and that medicine maintained her quality of life.
Want to be an Engineer? Ask yourself, what global problem do you want to solve? I can guarantee that there is a flavor of engineering that can help you find a solution to that problem.
