Jeni asked Kristy Rasbach, General Motors AddedWednesday, October 3, 2018 at 6:13 AM Was it hard to become a Mechanical Engineer for GM? I want to become an Engineer for BMW, MINI or Rolls Royce. I always loved cars, and last year I started to think a lot about Mechanical Engineering after meeting a retired Mechanical Engineer. I'm not old enough to go to collage yet. What can I do now to learn about Mechanical Engineering? I figured out how to fix a toy pull-back truck's gears. I'm really interested in car engines and I thought about becoming a Mechanic too. How hard was it to get into GM? If you are naturally interested in cars, engines, and other mechanical systems, then I think that engineering is definitely a career choice that you should explore. For now, keep being curious and learning new things! This website is a great resource for you as you explore the different areas of engineering. Look for STEM clubs at your school. If they have a robotics club or team, join it! I took a Basic Automotive class in high school where I learned how to do mechanical repair on vehicles. You may be able to find something like it a local vocational school, especially if being a mechanic is something in which you are interested. Was it hard to get into GM? Well, it definitely took many years of hard work! But it was not impossible. I first had to get accepted into an engineering college. After I got accepted, I had to work really hard in my classes for four years to achieve at least a 3.0, which is the minimum grade point average that most top employers require. Then I had to go through a job interview and perform well in all of my co-op assignments during GM to get a full time job there after graduation. My best advice for you now is to do well in school, take as many math and science classes as you can, and believe in yourself that you can do it, too!
